Hello, Jayden, here, just your local, unfriendly, homicidal vampire, no biggy. I have to say, my life has been beyond messed up, so if I had to pick out the best thing that ever happened to me, it would have to be Stephan Everwood taking me in at fifteen. Even if that pretty much marked the beginning of the end of my first murder spree, which wasn’t great for me. But…everything else, aside from that and the—ugh—tutors…yeah, not bad.

Still, it’s not like I’m not aware that Stephan deserves better than me in his life. The elf has suffered so much already. He will always deserve better than a monster like myself. I did try though, to stop hurting others, bad people or not. For him alone, I tried to ignore the urges, but as you will soon find out, trying only goes so far.

So, I guess, all I wanted to say is…welcome to my screwed up life. What will come is a monster falling in love, someone accepting my crazy, my monster becoming more present than ever before, a possible solution to my love of murder, and…a responsibility near the end that I’m not quite sure I’m ready for even now, but hell, I’m in love, so why not go all in on the family bliss?!

Jayden sauntered over, reaching out when only a foot away.
His eyes widened in shock when one of the man’s hands shot out and latched onto his wrist. The brief surge of magic that followed sent his spells crumbling down.
Large lilac eyes peered into his. Then his gaze traveled over the rest of him. “Are you hurt?”
Jayden blinked and yanked his wrist free as he stumbled back. “No.”
Did he not see the knife in Jayden’s hand? Not to mention the captured man behind him. Apparently not, he thought when the blond’s gaze drifted past him moments later. The elf shifted his head the other way as he eyed Richard.
“Does he deserve this?”

“What…?” Jayden trailed off dumbly.

Gaze sliding back to him, the man clarified, “What you’re doing to him, does he deserve it?”

How was he supposed to act in this situation? Did he have any reason to lie? “Yes.”

A deafening silence formed between them. The only voice was the one in his head—Richard’s voice. Now that he wasn’t actually hurting the man, Jayden found the constant begging and whining annoying—it was giving him a headache.

With a simple thought, he shut Richard’s mind down, knocking him out. Ah, much better…

Again Jayden tried to enter the blond’s mind. Unfortunately, he failed, just as he had the first time. It appeared that if Jayden wanted inside, he’d have to actually touch the man.

Oddly, none of what the individual was seeing seemed to affect him. Jayden would have preferred him freaking out. It was what he was used to. It did support Jayden’s belief that everyone had secrets. Jayden rolled his eyes—what an uplifting and joyful thing to be right about.

And blondie must have some pretty nasty ones—he hadn’t blinked twice at the bleeding vampire.
“My name is Stephan,” the man said at last.
“Uh…”
Were they really going to have a conversation? Jayden may not spend much time with other people—by choice—but even he knew this wasn’t normal.
Seriously, there was a man bleeding in a chair behind him. Was a little fear too much to ask for?
“What did he do?”

Lost in his own thoughts, he absently murmured, “He murdered a lot of children.”
Jayden blinked. He hadn’t meant to say that. Under his breath, he snidely muttered, “Why don’t you just tell him your whole life story?”

“What?” Stephan asked, his gaze returning to focus on Jayden. No doubt the man had heard him and was just being polite. At times like this, Jayden wished he were surrounded by humans. As annoying as they were, at least their senses sucked.
“Nothing.”
“Are you going to kill him?”
Blinking, he replied, “Yes.”
“Don’t.”
Jayden’s eyebrows rose. He’d never heard a single word sound so insistent. Careful not to stab himself, he crossed his arms and asked, “And why not?”
“There are other ways. Don’t let him make you a monster.”
Jayden laughed darkly. “I’m already one.”
“I don’t believe that. You would have killed me.

The man sounded pretty confident. Stephan was either stupid or insane—being mentally unstable himself, he was leaning toward insane.
“And how do you know I’m not going to?”
“You’re not a monster.”
“Well, Stephan, I hate to break this to you, but he’s not the first. The others are already dead and buried.

It’s a little late to be stopping now,” Jayden stated flatly. “You should leave.”
Turning to go back to his ‘victim’, he was only able to take a few steps before Stephan grasped his hand, forcing him to a stop.
Having had enough of whatever this was, Jayden reached out for Stephan’s mind.
His eyes widened when instead of slipping in, he found himself banging against a giant mental wall. While all immortals had walls of some kind, Jayden had never run into one he couldn’t breach. That he had now, when his night had already gone to hell, was beyond aggravating.
Perfect, just perfect. Jayden couldn’t wait to find out what else would go wrong. Of course, he had just confessed to multiple murders, so who knows?! Jail maybe?

Xavier Dayden stood back and watched as King Aiden composed his thoughts. There was going to be an argument for sure. However, his kings fully intended to win the fight that was about to happen.

He briefly wondered how he had never met King Adrian before. He had met the man’s father at the age of twenty-five—the man had been as much of a bastard as the previous Arcadian king, Davin.

It made sense, he supposed. When Adrian’s father, King Kade, still ruled, he avoided venturing into Vadin, as it was a mess, to say the least. When Adrian Silvermore Bloodhart took over, he had just been named the Captain of the Guards. For years he mostly remained in the castle. Then when King Rand died—later found to have been murder by his own twin brother—King Davin started a war with the Kingdom of Vadin. At the time, he had been forced to be Davin’s personal bodyguard. Xavier had been stuck in the castle being King Davin’s “faithful” bodyguard—or so Davin believed, up until the moment he allowed Tristan to remove the bastard’s head.

Seeing him now, he had to say it was quite a shame that he hadn’t met the man earlier. He did find it a bit odd that Adrian was barefoot. However, it was easy to ignore when Xavier examined the rest of him. Adrian was beautiful and had a voice that was pure sex. It was causing an alarming amount of sexual scenarios to run through his head, so much so that he had been forced to adjust himself.

Pushing the thoughts away, as they were seriously inappropriate considering the current situation, he turned his focus back to the conversation going on around him.

“Yes, rumors. We ignored them at first, as rumors

more often than not are just that. However, they started to multiply. When more tales of attacks

reached us, each more violent than the previous, we decided it was time to investigate ourselves if there was any truth behind them. What we found, Adrian, was not reassuring. Many of your people are worried about the future. They fear what could happen. They fear for your safety.” King Aiden paused and then asked, “Adrian, is there a reason for them to fear for you? Are the rumors true? Have there been multiple attempts on your life?”
The Vampire King appeared uneasy with the line of questioning. After a moment of uncomfortable silence, he said, “I think it would be best to have this conversation in the privacy of my throne room.” Adrian turned without another word and scurried through the gate, hurrying back down the path that led to the entrance of his castle.
Xavier almost laughed at how quickly he retreated, but held it in, as he doubted his kings would find any humor in the situation. They considered King Adrian one of their closest friends, and the situation worried them.

Both the twins and the unnamed guard—who been standing behind King Adrian—sighed as they watched him retreat. The guard stood a few inches shorter than Xavier and had black hair, gray eyes, and hawkish features. If he were one to bet, he would say the man was no doubt Baylin, the guard the twins had often spoken about being close to the Vadin King.

As the man disappeared into the castle, King Aiden murmured, “I suppose we should follow…”

The guard grimaced and motioned them forward. “Yes, please follow me, King Tristan, King Aiden. I apologize for his rude behavior. He has been unusually stubborn about this whole mess.”

“It’s fine, Baylin. We knew it wasn’t going to be easy when you informed us of all that was going on.

Obviously, he’s a bit out of sorts. Considering the situation, it’s understandable. You have nothing to apologize for,” King Tristan demurred, speaking at last.

Out of the two, Tristan was the peacekeeper. He was more level headed than his twin, and was unlikely to let his temper get the best of him. King Aiden, however, enjoyed a good fight and usually was the first to jump in. He also tended to be a bit harsher with his words.
Though, Tristan’s temper was a sight to see when unleashed. Overall, the two seemed to balance each other out, making up for each other’s faults.
Xavier followed them in and through the castle to the throne room. The rest of the entourage, who arrived with the kings, were shown to their rooms.
He found that unlike traditional Arcadian architecture, which often used wood for decorating, the walls he passed by were stone, the ceilings high and doming, the floors white marble. Gold leaf and silver veins spun throughout the walls in intricate vine-like designs. There were two guards stationed outside the throne-room doors when they arrived.
The throne room itself was empty aside from King Adrian, who sat on his throne. The room was two tiered. A large platformed area reached by three steps took up the majority of the room. On the platform currently sat three thrones. The one centered facing him, sat in the middle of looming stone pillars and backed into an arching alcove with burgundy drapery hanging behind it.

The pillars continued along the wall, as did the arches and panels of burgundy. The throne itself an elegant seat of red, gold, and silver.

Two thrones, sitting side by side, faced King Adrian

—thrones he would bet were not there earlier. As they entered and his kings sat down, the doors closed behind them, sealing the three kings, the guard Baylin, and himself inside.
They all remained quiet as the sound of the doors closing echoed throughout the room.
The hairs on the back of Xavier’s neck stood—someone was watching him. With so few in the room, it was easy to figure out who.

Adrian was examining him closely. “And who is this?”
King Aiden started to answer, but stopped when King Tristan grabbed his shoulder. Tristan seemed quite aware that now was not the time to reveal who or why Xavier was here. He would have to agree with the assessment, as King Adrian looked ready to bolt already.
“We’ll tell you why he’s here in time. Please take comfort in the fact that we trust him with our lives. Now, Adrian, please tell us the truth. What is going on?” Tristan pushed gently.
With a heavy sigh, Adrian admitted, “The rumors are true. There have been multiple attempts on my life, but it’s really nothing to worry about. I can take care of myself.”
King Aiden narrowed his eyes, anger building. “What about the rumors that each attack is more brutal than the last?”

Adrian began to fidget on his throne. “That rumor may also be true…”

Aiden slammed his fist down on the arm of his chair. “May be true? Adrian, it’s a yes or no question. What is being done to guarantee your safety? Is anything being done? Also, why weren’t we informed of this when it first started? Not only are you our friend, but you also rule a country that we share

borders with. This is a serious matter. We could face major diplomatic problems if you are unseated. Citizens of both countries could get hurt. Why are you being so foolish as to refuse a bodyguard? Have you lost all common sense?”
Xavier winced—in his outburst, King Aiden had revealed too much. The slip-up was not one King Adrian was likely to miss.
“And how do you know I’m refusing a bodyguard?” the vampire asked coldly, and turned to glare at the guard Baylin. “You dirty little fink! You couldn’t win an argument, so you went and tattled on me?”
